Leopard Tracking
Yala’s Block 1 supports the highest density of wild leopards in any protected area in the world. Morning safaris here regularly produce multiple sightings within a single session. Your guide’s knowledge of individual territory patterns and the specific rock outcroppings where the park’s resident cats are most reliably found significantly improves the quality and frequency of encounters.
Elephant and Large Mammal Safari
Large elephant herds gather at Yala’s coastal lagoons throughout the morning; sloth bears emerge from the rocky scrub terrain at dawn; water buffalo, sambar deer, and jackals move through the open grassland in the early light. The landscape variety, dry forest giving way to lagoon, then open coast, means the visual backdrop shifts throughout the day alongside the wildlife.
Coastal Zone and Lagoon Birdwatching
The intersection of dry forest, coastal scrub, and saltwater lagoon creates exceptional conditions for birdwatching, with painted storks, spoonbills, sea eagles, and Sri Lanka junglefowl among over 200 species regularly recorded within the park. The coastal sections of Block 1 are particularly rewarding in the early morning light.
